Common Duiker (Sylvicapra grimmia)

Common (or Grey) Duiker stand around 50cms to the shoulder and weigh around 19kg. The name Duiker is derived from the Dutch word “Duik”, which means dive, which is descriptive of their low, running Gait. The Common Duiker is mostly a browser, most active in the late afternoon and early evening. The Common Duiker is not water dependent as he obtains enough moisture from his browse. The Common Duiker is most likely to be found alone, favouring thick bush and long grass. Rifles of calibre .223 and upward are suitable for hunting the Common Duiker. Duiker trophy assessment is difficult as most often only fleeting glances are all your PH will get. If the tips of the horns are higher than an inch or so above the ears, it should be a fairly high scoring specimen.
